The Malcolm Tweddle and Edith Rogers Dry Pond and Sewer Improvements project was initiated in the Millbourne Urban Area. In the past, both surface and basement flooding had been reported by residents of this area. Increasing the conveyance capacity of the storm sewers was therefore proposed to mitigate the risks of future flooding in this area. The design asked for several tunnels performed by the trenchless microtunneling method. Therefore, contractor Bothar Inc. was awarded with the construction works.

The Microtunneling Support System (MSS) in combination with the Hydraulic Joint allowed the contractor to monitor several challenging aspects such as the high start-up forces due to a forced winter break, tight curve radii and relatively low ground coverage.  The great advantage here is that possible problems were often discovered preventively. However, special congratulations go to the  on-site team who managed to keep the tunnelling process going  24/7 while the Canadian winter temperatures went down to -48°C.
